Santorini is the ultimate destination for honeymooning this year. With its whitewashed beaches, ancient archaeological sites, blue-domed churches, vineyards and white windmills it will have your heart. Every year couples from around the world visit Santorini. This island was formed as the result of a volcanic eruption some 4000 years ago. Craters formed by this eruption can still be seen on and around Santorini.

Fira and Oia are two of the islands most alluring locations. Fira (or Thera) is famous for its whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches, its famous caldera and hotels with vast terraces that allow you to enjoy all the beautiful views of the island. Fira mainly thrives on tourism and it has many souvenir shops, cafes and hotels where you can get the true taste of Santorini. Many companies in Fira offer cruise services so you two lovebirds can embark on a cruise from Fira.

Oia on the other hand is located on the Northern tip of Santorini and is known for its mesmerizing sunsets. Oia is filled with hotels with infinity pools overlooking the caldera. Oia also contains Amoudi Bay which is one of the islands hidden treasures. Amoudi Bay offers unique cliff diving opportunities for couples craving adrenaline rushes. It has many eateries that will enable you to tingle your palate with the true taste of Greek style seafood. If you two are looking for a swim, then this bay has some amazing swimming spots that you should definitely check out!

Perissa Beach is one of Santorini’s most famous beaches and is located near the village of Perissa. This breathtaking beach consists of black volcanic sand and is surrounded by tamarisk trees. There are several good seafood cafes and restaurants here where you can indulge in the local cuisine. You can also rent umbrellas and sunbeds here, put on some sunscreen and bask in the sun or even participate in water sports and other interesting activities and have the time of your life!

Akrotiri is an ancient archaeological site located 12-km away from Fira. Akrotiri was covered in lava after a volcanic explosion which took place in the 16th century BC. If you’re a history enthusiast, then you can walk through the debris together and discover the hidden secrets of the ancient civilization of Akrotiri together!

Another archaeological site located in Santorini is Ancient Thera. These ruins date back to the 9th Century BC and are remnants of the Byzantine and Roman Empire. You can also visit the Museum of Fira in order to see firsthand the artifacts from these ruins!

You can’t miss out on the Red Beach if you ever visit Santorini! This beach is accessible through a short path from Akrotiti and it is so known because of the magnificent red cliff under which it is located.

The tiny village of Pyrgos is Santorini’s former capital and is located in the middle of Santorini. It has many medieval whitewashed buildings and blue-domed buildings that make great sites for photography. While you’re in Pyrgos you should also explore an old castle atop a hill located in Pyrgos. You can also walk to Mount Profitis Ilias which is an 18th century sanctuary. If you are a bibliophile, then this sanctuary is haven because not only does it contain a library but it also contains ancient archives that will fascinate you beyond compare.
