The Grace Of Monaco Says “I Do”!

The royal wedding took place on April 18th, 1956, in the throne room of the Prince’s palace in Monaco-Ville. The religious ceremony was held a day later at the St. Nicolas Cathedral in Monaco-Ville, Monaco.

On the civil ceremony Grace Kelly wore a blush-colored, two-piece lace dress. She accessorized her outfit with matching heels, a pleated chiffon headband and white gloves. The Prince wore a morning coat, gray trousers, white waistcoat and a gray silk tie.

The Dreamy Dress

For the religious ceremony Grace wore a glorious gown gifted to her by MGM. It was designed by costume designer Helen Rose, it reportedly required 30 seamstresses and six weeks to complete. The gown was made with 320 yards of lace, 25 yards of silk peau de soie, 25 yards of silk taffeta and 100 yards of silk tulle. It had a high neckline, multiple petticoats and hundreds of tiny pearls embroidered on to it.

Her veil was made with 90 yards of tulle tied with bows of taffeta and lace. Grace did not wear a tiara; she wore a Juliet cap to hold her extended and extravagant veil. It was adorned with lace, pearls and paper orange blossoms.

The Prince In The Uniform

Prince Rainier wore a dress uniform he had designed himself. It had a black tunic with gold leaves on the cuffs, sky blue trousers with a gold stripe down the side. The tunic was graced with medals, and across his chest hung the red and white sash representing the Order of St. Charles. And he surely looked more decadent, then the Princes of our era.

The Ceremony

For the wedding ceremony, the church of St. Nicolas was filled with white lilacs and lilies of the valley. Over 600 people attended the ceremony including family members, royals, movie stars and society notables.

Talk About A Grand Reception!

The reception that followed the religious ceremony was an elaborate affair. The luncheon buffet included caviar, smoked salmon, shrimp, ham, salami, soup, cheese, jellied eggs, salmon with cucumber salad, cold lobster, and chicken, accompanied by champagne. Don’t miss out on that multi-tiered cake. The cake had six layers and each layer was softly decorated with scenes of Monaco history.  The Prince and Princess used Rainier’s ceremonial sword to cut the cake. Now that’s a feast fit for a royal ceremony!
