We have often seen African culture in the movies, with people dancing to the drum beats wearing vibrant clothes and beautiful jewelry. We can only imagine how joyful and entertaining their weddings must be! They are divided into different tribes, with each of them having their own traditional wedding wear. With time, white weddings have caught up pace in the region but there are many who still go for a traditional wedding, following their own rituals and beautiful attires. So we present you with seven African tribal wedding attires the vibrancy of which will put our desi attires to shame.
This tribe is based on the highlands of Ethiopia and Eritrea. Both the bride and groom wear beautiful capes known as ‘Kaba,’ and the bride wears a very stylish hairstyle called ‘Albaso.’
Efik is a Nigerian minority tribe. The bride and groom both wear similar color coordinated dresses. The bride wears a crop top and a mermaid style skirt that is decorated with beads also known as Ofong Ukod Anwang. The groom wears Onyonyo, which is white shirt with a jacket decorated with beads. The groom’s attire includes a wrapper similar to that of the bride but called as Okpomkpomon.
Based in Ghana, the Ashanti tribe is considered to be the largest in Africa. The colourful, geometric attire of both the bride and groom is called Kente matched with exquisite beads and jewelry.
Igbo tribe is based in South-East Nigeria. The traditional attire of the groom is called Ibo Kaftan and while the bride wears George wrappers with a beautiful headgear and a decorated blouse.
This particular tribe has a lot of beads in their traditional attire. Edo is one of the oldest tribes of Africa and is located in Southern Nigeria. The bride drapes herself with beads that includes a bracelet known as ‘Ivie-ebo,’ ‘Emiehorivie’ earrings, and a cape that is made of beads and known as ‘Ewu-ivie.’ She also wears a very royal looking crown known as ‘Okuku.’ The groom on the other hand wears a beaded cap and beaded necklace that complements the bride’s.
One of the very popular tribes in Africa, Zulu weddings, also called ‘Umabo,’ are full of dance and music. The bride wears a large headwear known as Inkehli, a leather skirt called Isidwaba and a blouse called Isicwaya. The groom wears Iklolode over his head, Isinene and Ibheshu to cover his legs halfway and Isembatho that he drapes over his shoulder.
The Yoruba tribe is based in West-Nigeria and the people are considered to be very cultural. The wedding attire of the groom consists of a kaftan called ‘Agbada,’ that has multiple layers and a cap called ‘Fila.’ The bride’s attire includes a pretty skirt, a blouse to go with and headscarf known as ‘Gele.’ The interesting fact about their wedding attire is that it’s of the same colour and material.
Every African tribe presents a different culture, and rituals that are interesting and full of joy. Despite the changing trends, a majority of tribes follow their traditional wedding celebrations that are full of colours, beautiful attires and intricate jewelry.
