WHAT IS IT?

The standard ketogenic diet (SKD) consists of all vegetables that grow above ground, along with peppers, eggs, raspberries, fish, spinach, Brazil Nuts, cheese, greens, meat, coconut oil, beans, tomatoes, pecans, mayonnaise, mushrooms, olives, blackberries, broccoli, cucumbers, lettuce, kale, zucchini, cauliflower and cabbages.

Once you consume the abovementioned food, excessive fat is stored in your body. Also, our body produces glucose and insulin, which will provide the energy you need if you skip lunch or dinner. After it is finished and our blood sugar level is slightly below its average value, the phenomenon of ketosis occurs in which that stored portion of fat makes ‘ketones’ that will provide you with the energy to carry on with your day.

Another approach to the keto diet is the “high protein ketogenic diet” or HPKD where you should not take more than 50 grams of carbs per day along with foods that are rich in proteins. If you are working out as well, then a targeted ketogenic diet will work for you where you can add carbs before and after exercises.

HOW TO DO IT?

Ideally, Keto diet should be started 3-4 months before your big day. Initially, a two-week plan will clarify what food content suits you the most and also if you need to make changes to your current plan. Based on this, you can continue your diet and further extend your plan to 30 days.

On a daily basis, you can consume 2050 grams of any of these nutrients in the form of salads, omelets, meatballs, shakes etc. during breakfast, lunch and dinner hours.

WHAT TO AVOID

Once you hop on the bandwagon, it is recommended to stop your intake of rice, potatoes, chocolate, smoothies, ice-cream, fruit juice, cereal, strawberries, kidney beans, pasta, sodas, peas, lentils and dairy products. Tea, coffee and green tea can be consumed but with low sugar. In case, you refuse to give up on all these temptations, you might experience nausea and headaches. You heard us! Hence, it is crucial to avoid adding miscellaneous foods in your routine and strictly follow a pattern.

ARE THERE ANY CHALLENGES?

Dear brides, be warned! There are several risks involved with this diet most of which can be avoided if you consume enough vegetables and sufficient quantities of magnesium, sodium and potassium. Similarly, if you will not take water regularly, you might experience a mineral deficiency, bad cholesterol and in severe cases gastrointestinal distress or kidney stones. If you are diabetic, then you should not follow the keto diet unless you have your doctor’s permission or are under his supervision. If you have diabetes, then keto might result in ketoacidosis which is a condition in which the blood becomes too acidic. Furthermore, keto is not a long term diet and can almost always result in regained weight. The only way to control this is if you learn portion control and refrain from binge eating after the diet. This diet also increases your chances of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Considering this, it is important to keep a regular check on your diet and make sure that you control it effectively before your big day!
